But I feel very different about him now. I have nothing but the highest respect for the man for what he has so graciously and professionally endured throughout his term. The Republicans should be completely ashamed for the way they’ve treated a sitting President. (I left the GOP shortly after Obama won when I saw the racists in the party come out loud and proud.) Obama has made some terrible mistakes, but so did Bush. And Obama’s mistakes didn’t get nearly so many people killed. I believe now that Obama has been a good president. I am terrified that he might sign us up for the TPP and I hope Bernie will be able to stop it in time.
See, time was when most Americans wanted a president they could look up to, not a president who was “one of us.” Anti-intellectualism, which also fell heavy on Obama, has a long history in America but it used to stop at the White House gates. No. JFK is. Not for what he did or didn’t do in his policies, but because he brought the country together. He made us proud. He gave us goals…the Peace Corp, the moon landing quest, hope. We were Americans and we could accomplish anything! Contrary to the popular opinions of many Republicans and all Trump supporters – being black in America is not against the law. You all just make us feel like it is. I cannot believe I’m actually going to answer this question. At the time Obama was first elected, I was a Texas Republican. I couldn’t stand Barack Obama — I would turn off the radio or TV whenever he was on. I didn’t even want to hear his voice.
With an Ivy League undergrad degree, a Harvard law degree, and teaching Constitutional Law at the U of Chicago, Obama was certainly an intellectual president. But in this day of voting for “who you’d rather have a beer with,” it’s important to remember that Americans have elected many intellectual presidents. Jefferson was an architect, author, historian, and of course a fine writer. Theodore Roosevelt wrote dozens of books and read a book a day. Bill Clinton was a Rhodes Scholar. Jimmy Carter studied nuclear physics. Harry Truman did not go to college — the last president not to do so — but was self-taught in history to an admirable degree. Lincoln was also in this category and surely the best writer among presidents.
